At the moment, DPA Microphones is relaunching some of their iconic microphones, each featuring a subtle yet revolutionary upgrade in their design: CORE+ by DPA. But what exactly is CORE+, and why is DPA making such a big deal out of it? The short answer is that this technology represents a genuine breakthrough in miniature microphone performance. Let’s dive deeper into why CORE+ is generating so much excitement in the professional sound world.
CORE is the brand name for DPA’s miniature microphone preamps, the industry-leading 4060/61, 4071 and 6060/61 lavalier mics, which are meticulously engineered to minimize signal distortion and extend dynamic range. Even before CORE+, these preamps set a high standard, delivering remarkably clean audio by reducing harmonic distortion. However, the louder the sound source, or the higher the SPL (Sound Pressure Level), the more distortion inevitably appears through harmonic artifacts and this compromises the clarity and transparency of the recording.
The extent of this distortion is quantified as Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). To put it in perspective: a THD of 0.001% is considered extremely clean, virtually transparent to the listener, while distortion becomes audibly noticeable once THD exceeds around 1%. Traditionally, with CORE and other miniature preamps, there was a direct correlation between SPL and THD: the louder the input signal, the higher the distortion level introduced by the preamp circuitry.
Here’s where the leap forward happens:
Introducing CORE+ by DPA. This new generation of miniature preamp technology dramatically reduces distortion, virtually eliminating it across a much broader dynamic range than before. CORE+ maintains extreme linearity in distortion performance up to an input level of 120–130 dB SPL. With the DPA 4061 for example it reaches a THD of just 0.5% at approximately 136 dB SPL, while the previous CORE technology reached the same distortion level around 130 dB SPL. This means CORE+ can handle significantly louder sounds with less audible distortion.
But there’s a caveat: beyond that threshold, the distortion curve steepens quickly. Taking in the 4061 as an example again it reaches a 1% THD level at 137 dB SPL, just one decibel louder. Beyond this point, both CORE and CORE+ share a similar maximum SPL limit of around 144 dB SPL. This boundary ensures that even at the most extreme sound levels, DPA microphones maintain remarkable clarity and resilience.
This advancement is nothing short of remarkable. DPA has long been synonymous with ultra-high precision microphones, trusted by professionals worldwide in the most demanding audio environments, from broadcast studios to concert halls and film sets. The CORE+ technology exemplifies DPA’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in microphone design, delivering unprecedented audio fidelity with minimal distortion.
